BREAKING: Jeffrey R. Holland, next in line to lead the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has died. He was 85.

Holland died early Saturday in Salt Lake City from kidney disease complications. He was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Holland was the longest-tenured member of the Quorum after President Dallin H. Oaks. This positioned him to succeed Oaks as church president. Oaks became president in October.

The death throws the church's succession plan into question. The Church has not yet announced next steps.
