The Grace Trust, a Jersey-based charity, provides year-round support to vulnerable individuals, offering what it describes as "the Christmas spirit right through the year." The organization assists approximately 700 to 750 people annually who are grappling with poverty, loneliness, or addiction.
Vinni Jones, the general manager of the Grace Trust, noted an increase in the diversity of people seeking assistance, including a growing number of older individuals in need of community support. The charity operates a drop-in center on Lewis Street in St Helier, aiming to bring joy to those who visit. The Trust's food bank aids 500 people each year and also organizes activities such as singing, art sessions, and Saturday lunches.
According to Jones, the Trust provided extra festive items at the food bank during the Christmas season. Recently, 92 people attended a Christmas meal at St Paul's Centre, supported by 20 volunteers. Entertainment was provided by Fiddler's Green and the Trust's Parklife choir. Jones explained that the charity experiences a surge in demand during the Christmas period, which can be a particularly difficult time for many.
The Grace Trust's work reflects a broader trend of community organizations stepping in to address social needs. As traditional support systems weaken and economic pressures rise, charities like the Grace Trust play a crucial role in providing essential services and fostering a sense of belonging. The Trust encourages anyone in need to visit their center.
