An Illinois driver was charged with felonies after allegedly striking and killing a pedestrian while livestreaming on TikTok. Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, known as Tea Tyme on TikTok, faces charges of reckless homicide and aggravated use of a communications device resulting in death, according to the Zion Police Department. The incident occurred in Zion, Illinois.

The New York Times reported that a video, allegedly from McCarty-Wroten's account, captured the moment of impact. A loud thud is heard, followed by the woman saying, "I hit somebody." Surveillance footage reportedly showed McCarty-Wroten's vehicle entering an intersection against a red light. Investigators determined she did not slow down before hitting Darren Lucas, who later died at a hospital.

The charges raise concerns about distracted driving and the use of social media while operating a vehicle. The incident could prompt further debate about the responsibilities of social media platforms in monitoring and regulating user content. McCarty-Wroten's lawyer told the NYT that evidence will show the incident was an accident, a negligent act, but not intentional or reckless.

The use of smartphones and livestreaming applications like TikTok while driving has become a growing safety concern. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has long campaigned against distracted driving.
