Many new drone users in the UK who received drones as Christmas presents faced a new requirement to take a theory test before flying them outdoors, effective January 1st, according to the BBC. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) implemented the new rule, mandating that individuals flying drones or model aircraft weighing 100g or more outside must complete an online theory test to obtain a Flyer ID.
Previously, the Flyer ID was only required for heavier drones. The CAA estimated that up to half a million people in the UK could be affected by the new regulations.
CAA spokesperson Jonathan Nicholson stated that with drones becoming a "common Christmas present," it was important for people to know how to comply with the law. The test aims to ensure that new drone users are aware of the rules and regulations surrounding drone operation in the UK.
