China has proposed strict new regulations for artificial intelligence (AI) aimed at protecting children and preventing chatbots from providing advice that could lead to self-harm or violence, according to reports from BBC Technology and BBC Business. The proposed rules, announced recently, also require AI developers to ensure their models do not generate content that promotes gambling.

The regulations, once finalized, will apply to all AI products and services operating within China. This move signifies a major effort to regulate the rapidly expanding AI technology sector, which has faced increasing scrutiny regarding safety concerns throughout the year.

The announcement follows a significant increase in the launch of chatbots both in China and globally. The draft rules were published over the weekend, according to the BBC.
