Guinea Coup Leader Mamady Doumbouya Wins Presidential Election
Conakry, Guinea - Mamady Doumbouya, the leader of the 2021 coup in Guinea, provisionally won the presidential election held on December 28, according to results announced Tuesday. The victory potentially marks a transition away from military rule nearly five years after Doumbouya seized power.
Doumbouya secured 86.72 percent of the vote, according to provisional results, achieving an absolute majority that eliminates the need for a runoff election. The election saw Doumbouya competing against eight other candidates.
The election, the first since the 2021 coup, was marked by controversy. Key opposition figures were excluded from participating, leading to boycott calls and raising questions about the legitimacy of the electoral process.
According to Al Jazeera, the Supreme Court is now tasked with reviewing the election results. This review process opens the door for potential challenges to the outcome.
