Sydney held a vigil Wednesday for victims of the Bondi Beach attack. The one-minute silence honored the 15 people killed at a Hanukkah celebration weeks earlier. Thousands gathered at Sydney Harbour Bridge an hour before midnight. They held candles and phone lights.
The Harbour Bridge shone white. A menorah, a Jewish symbol, was projected onto the bridge. The vigil followed a call from Lord Mayor Clover Moore. She urged solidarity with the Jewish community against violence and antisemitism.
On December 14, two gunmen attacked the beach celebration. It was Australia's worst mass shooting in decades. Dozens were wounded. Police killed one gunman. The other, Naveed Akram, 24, survived and was arrested. He faces murder and terrorism charges.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has not yet commented on the vigil. The investigation into the attack continues. Akram's trial date is pending.
