AI Security Lags Behind Adoption, Leaving Supply Chains Vulnerable
Enterprises face a growing threat from artificial intelligence as adoption of AI agents outpaces security measures, creating significant vulnerabilities in AI supply chains. According to research from Stanford University's 2025 Index Report, while four in ten enterprise applications will feature task-specific AI agents this year, only 6% of organizations have an advanced AI security strategy in place.
The rapid integration of AI, particularly large language models (LLMs), has created a "visibility gap" regarding how, where, when, and through which workflows and tools these models are being used or modified, VentureBeat reported. This lack of transparency, coupled with the absence of Model Software Bill of Materials (SBOMs), leaves organizations exposed to unpredictable AI threats.
Palo Alto Networks predicts that 2026 will bring the first major lawsuits holding executives personally liable for rogue AI actions, highlighting the urgency for improved AI governance. The accelerating and unpredictable nature of AI threats means that traditional governance approaches, such as increased budgets or headcount, are insufficient.
One CISO described model SBOMs as "the Wild West of governance today," underscoring the current lack of standardization and oversight in this critical area. Experts emphasize the need for organizations to prioritize AI supply chain visibility to mitigate potential risks and avoid legal repercussions.
