Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested Saturday in Caracas, Venezuela. A US military operation, dubbed "Operation Absolute Resolve," led to their capture at Fuerte Tiuna. The pair face narco-terrorism charges in New York.
The early-morning raid on the military complex lasted approximately 150 minutes. US troops from an elite unit apprehended Maduro and Flores as they attempted to flee into a safe room. Fuerte Tiuna, Venezuela's largest military complex, sustained significant damage from US strikes.
The US says the operation took months of planning. Venezuelan ruling party leader Nahum Fernández confirmed the capture occurred at the complex. The Associated Press reported Fernández's statement.
The US government alleges Maduro's involvement in narco-terrorism. Maduro's arrest marks an unprecedented event in modern politics. He and his wife are currently detained in New York.
Maduro will face legal proceedings in a New York court. Further details regarding the charges and legal strategy are expected to be released soon.
