A rare copy of Action Comics No. 1, the comic book that introduced Superman to the world, was sold in a private deal for a record $15 million. The sale, announced Friday, surpasses the previous record of $9.12 million set in November for a copy of Superman No. 1.

Metropolis Collectibles Comic Connect, a Manhattan-based firm, brokered the deal, stating that both the buyer and seller wished to remain anonymous. Vincent Zurzolo, president of Metropolis Collectibles Comic Connect, described the comic as being "among the Holy Grail of comic books."

Published in 1938 for 10 cents, Action Comics No. 1 is an anthology featuring various characters, but it is most notable for presenting the origin story of Superman. The comic details Superman's birth on a dying planet, his journey to Earth, and his decision to use his extraordinary strength for the benefit of humanity. Its publication is widely considered the beginning of the superhero genre.

Approximately 100 copies of Action Comics No. 1 are believed to exist today. This particular copy had a unique history, as it was once owned by actor Nicolas Cage and was stolen from his home.

The sale highlights the enduring appeal and investment value of rare comic books. "Without Superman and his popularity, there would be no Batman," Zurzolo noted, emphasizing the character's foundational role in the comic book industry. The identity of the new owner and their plans for the comic remain undisclosed.
