Wing, the drone delivery arm of Alphabet, is significantly scaling its partnership with Walmart, announcing plans to extend its on-demand drone delivery service to an additional 150 Walmart stores across the United States. This marks the second expansion of the collaboration in under a year, signaling strong customer adoption and a growing appetite for drone-based retail solutions.
The rollout, slated to occur throughout this year and into 2027, builds upon existing drone delivery services already operating at Walmart stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta metropolitan areas. According to Heather Rivera, Wing's chief business officer, the expansion is driven by encouraging usage data, with the company's top 25 customers utilizing the service an average of three times per week. Popular items ordered via drone include everyday grocery staples such as eggs, ground beef, fresh produce like tomatoes and avocados, limes, lunchables, and snack items like Takis. Once the expansion is complete, Wing will operate from more than 270 Walmart stores, including locations in Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami, reaching approximately 10% of the U.S. population.
This expansion underscores the increasing viability of drone delivery in the retail sector.
