Sudan's Government Returns to Khartoum After Years of Civil War
KHARTOUM - Sudan's military-led government returned to the nation's capital, Khartoum, on Sunday, after operating from Port Sudan for nearly three years due to the ongoing civil war. Prime Minister Kamil Idris announced the government's return and its commitment to restoring essential services for the city's residents, many of whom had fled during the conflict.
The government was forced out of Khartoum by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) when civil war erupted between the military and the RSF in 2023. The army recaptured the capital in March of last year, marking a significant breakthrough. According to Prime Minister Idris, the "government of hope" was officially back in Khartoum and would prioritize improving services for the city's beleaguered residents.
The return followed reports of widespread destruction and a breakdown of basic services in Khartoum during the RSF occupation. The government's focus will be on addressing these issues and rebuilding the city. The military's leader, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, visited Khartoum's presidential palace hours after it was recaptured last year.
