Sudan's Government Returns to Khartoum After Years of Civil War
KHARTOUM - Sudan's military-led government returned to the nation's capital, Khartoum, on Sunday, after operating from Port Sudan for nearly three years due to the ongoing civil war. Prime Minister Kamil Idris announced the government's return and its commitment to restoring essential services for the city's residents, many of whom had fled during the conflict.
The move followed the army's recapture of Khartoum in March of last year, marking a significant breakthrough after being forced out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) when civil war erupted in 2023, according to Reuters.
"The 'government of hope' was officially back in Khartoum," Prime Minister Idris told reporters, signaling the start of efforts to improve services for the city's beleaguered residents.
The return to Khartoum came amidst reports of widespread destruction and a breakdown of basic services during the RSF occupation. The government's primary focus will be on addressing these issues and restoring normalcy to the lives of those who remained in the city or are beginning to return.
