Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $45 million to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization serving LGBTQ youth, marking the largest single donation in the organization's 27-year history. The gift, revealed on Monday, comes after a period of management turmoil, layoffs, and the loss of significant federal funding for the organization.
The Trevor Project's CEO, Jaymes Black, described the donation as "transformational" in a blog post. Black stated that upon receiving notification of Scott's gift, "I literally could not believe it and it took some time. I actually gasped."
The donation is especially timely, following the Trump administration's decision to shut down counseling services for queer youth through the federally funded 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, for which The Trevor Project administered services, according to Wired.
Scott, whose wealth largely originates from her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, previously donated $6 million to The Trevor Project during the first Trump administration, according to Wired. While Scott gave more than $7 billion to nonprofits in 2025, this gift to The Trevor Project was not included among the donations she disclosed on her website in December, according to Fortune.
