Swiss Regions Ban Pyrotechnics After Deadly Ski Bar Fire
Several Swiss cantons have banned the use of pyrotechnic devices in indoor public venues following a deadly fire at a ski resort bar in Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve. The fire, which killed 40 people and injured 116, prompted immediate action from regional authorities.
The canton of Valais, where Crans-Montana is located, announced a ban on pyrotechnics in all indoor public venues. Geneva also implemented a similar ban, days after Vaud became the first of Switzerland's 26 regions to take such a measure, according to BBC World.
The fire at Le Constellation bar is believed to have started when sparklers attached to champagne bottles ignited soundproofing material. Investigations are underway to determine if safety oversights contributed to the disaster. Manslaughter charges have been filed against the bar owners, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in public spaces.
In the wake of the tragedy, authorities in Valais announced that each of the victims would receive an emergency payment of 10,000 Swiss francs (approximately $12,500 USD). A fund is also being established to collect donations for the victims and their families.
The bans reflect a growing concern over safety in public venues and a commitment to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The investigations into the fire continue, with a focus on identifying any lapses in safety protocols and ensuring accountability.
