England will launch a new £1 billion emergency fund in April to aid people facing financial crisis. The Crisis and Resilience Fund will operate annually for three years. Individuals can apply for emergency cash through their local council, regardless of benefit status.
The fund aims to address unexpected expenses or income loss, such as boiler breakdowns or job loss. Councils can distribute money to prevent individuals from entering crisis. The scheme replaces the temporary Household Support Fund, which expires at the end of March.
Funding levels remain similar to the previous scheme. The Local Government Association reports many councils believe the funding is insufficient to meet local welfare needs. The cash element marks a change from past support methods.
The Household Support Fund was established in 2021 and repeatedly extended. Councils will now administer the new Crisis and Resilience Fund. Further guidance on application processes is expected from local authorities in the coming weeks.
