Threads Edges Out X in Daily Mobile Users, Data Shows
Meta's Threads has surpassed X, formerly known as Twitter, in daily active mobile users, according to a report from market intelligence firm Similarweb. As of January 7, 2026, Threads boasted 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android devices, while X had 125 million.
The shift in mobile usage reflects Threads' growth strategy and feature enhancements, according to industry analysts. While X maintains dominance on the web, Threads has seen a steady increase in daily active users over the past several months.
The rise of Threads on mobile devices appears to be driven by longer-term trends, rather than a direct reaction to recent controversies surrounding X. These controversies include instances where users allegedly utilized X's integrated AI, Grok, to generate non-consensual nude images of women, including minors, prompting investigations and user concern.
Meta's cross-promotion efforts have also contributed to Threads' growth, according to Similarweb. The data suggests that Threads' success on mobile is a result of a deliberate strategy to capture the mobile market.
