Netflix is launching a new live voting feature, allowing users to interact with live content during broadcasts. The feature will debut with the premiere of the live-streamed talent show "Star Search" on January 20, offering viewers the ability to vote for contestants in real-time.
Subscribers can participate by selecting from multiple-choice options or rating performances on a five-star scale. Votes can be cast using either a TV remote or the Netflix mobile application. The platform will tally votes in real-time, providing immediate feedback during the broadcast. Voting will be time-limited; votes submitted after the allotted time will not be counted, meaning on-demand viewers cannot participate.
The company began testing live voting in August 2025 with "Dinner Time Live with David Chang." Elizabeth Stone, Netflix CTO, confirmed the upcoming wide release of the feature during TechCrunch Disrupt 2025. "If you're sitting at home watching 'Star Search' on your TV, you'll be able to either on the TV or your mobile phone actually put in a vote that advances or doesn't advance some of the contestants on the show," Stone said.
The introduction of live voting represents a significant step for Netflix in enhancing viewer engagement and creating a more interactive streaming experience. By incorporating real-time feedback mechanisms, Netflix aims to replicate the dynamic atmosphere of live television while leveraging the accessibility of its streaming platform. This move could potentially influence other streaming services to adopt similar interactive features, further blurring the lines between traditional broadcasting and on-demand content.
The live voting feature will be available globally. Netflix has not yet announced specific details regarding future applications of the technology beyond "Star Search," but the company is expected to evaluate user response and explore potential integration with other live events and interactive content formats.
