Three people died in a shooting in Lake Cargelligo, a small town in New South Wales, Australia, on Wednesday, local time, according to police. A fourth person was hospitalized and is in serious but stable condition.
The New South Wales Police Force stated that officers responded to reports of a shooting on Walker Street near Yelkin Street at approximately 4:40 p.m. local time (5:40 a.m. GMT). Two women and one man were pronounced dead at the scene.
Local police are investigating the incident, and authorities have urged the public to avoid the area. Residents were advised to remain indoors as of Wednesday. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the incident is being treated as a suspected domestic violence attack.
Heavily armed tactical police have been deployed to the area as authorities attempt to locate the gunman. Seven News reported that the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to the local council.
Lake Cargelligo is a town of approximately 1,500 residents located in the center of New South Wales. The investigation is ongoing.
