Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin announced plans to launch more than 5,400 satellites to create a new communications network called TeraWave, directly challenging Elon Musk's Starlink, which currently dominates the satellite internet market. The company aims to provide continuous, high-speed internet access around the world, focusing on businesses and governments, according to a recent announcement.
Blue Origin stated that TeraWave will offer the ability to move large amounts of data much more quickly than rival services. Multiple news sources reported that the company intends to launch the satellites by the end of 2027. While TeraWave boasts potentially faster speeds, it will have fewer satellites in orbit compared to Starlink.
Starlink, part of Musk's rocket firm SpaceX, also offers internet and phone services to individual customers. In contrast, Blue Origin said TeraWave will be focused on data centers. Amazon's Project Kuiper is also entering the satellite internet arena, focusing on individual customers, creating further competition in the market.
