France Seizes Suspected Russian Tanker in Mediterranean
French authorities seized an oil tanker, suspected of being part of Russia's "shadow fleet," in the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday. The tanker, named the "Grinch," is suspected of violating international sanctions and operating under a false flag, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.
The French navy, with assistance from allies including the UK, boarded the vessel between Spain and Morocco. French maritime authorities stated that a search of the vessel "confirmed the doubts as to the regularity of the flag." The seizure highlights international efforts to enforce sanctions against Russia and combat clandestine activities allegedly financing the conflict in Ukraine.
The "shadow fleet" is reportedly a network used by Russia to circumvent restrictions on its oil exports amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, stated the tanker was "subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag".
Russia's embassy in Paris stated that it had not been informed of the seizure.
