GOP Lawyer Chris Madel Ends Minnesota Governor Bid, Cites ICE 'Disaster'
Chris Madel, a Republican lawyer and candidate for Minnesota governor, ended his campaign, citing his inability to support what he called "national Republicans' stated retribution on the citizens of our state," according to NPR News. Madel, who represented the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer involved in the fatal shooting of Renee Macklin Good in Minneapolis, stated he could no longer support the current immigration crackdown.
The shooting in Minneapolis became a focal point of national debate, with Jon Stewart addressing the controversy on "The Daily Show." Stewart criticized Republicans for accusing liberals of "gaslighting" the Trump administration regarding the incident, Variety reported. He played clips of the United States Secret Service during the show, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding the event.
The ICE shooting also drew criticism from unexpected corners. Time magazine noted that Mark McCloskey, who gained notoriety in 2020 for brandishing guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in St. Louis, expressed concerns about potential government overreach. "Say goodbye to the Second Amendment," McCloskey stated, according to Time, suggesting the government was using the crisis to erode gun rights.
Meanwhile, in other news, Dramanation, the production house behind the series "Whiskey on the Rocks," unveiled two new premium projects: the Nordic Noir actioner "Becker & Kempe" and the Cold War heist dramedy "Made in Sweden," Variety reported. These projects join the already announced English-language murder mystery series "To Catch A Murderer."
In Yemen, Mohammed Amar is working to save endangered trees. Amar, the Indigenous on-site manager of the Socotra endangered-tree project, is working with scientists from Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic, and other European universities for 25 years, according to Nature News. He acts as the connection between the scientists, Indigenous communities and local authorities.
