Philippines Ferry Sinking Leaves Dozens Dead or Missing
At least 15 people died after a ferry sank in the southern Philippines overnight, according to Sky News. The MV Trisha Kerstin 3, an inter-island vessel, was en route to Jolo island in Sulu province from Zamboanga when it encountered technical problems and sank near Baluk-Baluk in Basilan province.
Coast guard officials reported rescuing at least 316 of the 332 passengers and 27 crew members onboard, Sky News reported. As of Monday, January 26, 2026, 28 people remained missing. The incident occurred just after midnight local time.
Severe Winter Storm Claims Lives in the United States
Meanwhile, in the United States, a severe winter storm has claimed the lives of at least 30 people, Euronews reported. The storm brought freezing temperatures and power outages to much of the country.
Euronews stated that roughly two-thirds of the U.S. is experiencing a cold wave, with the Midwest, South, and Northeast regions being the most heavily affected. A new surge of Arctic air is expected to prolong freezing temperatures in areas already covered in snow and ice. The storm has also caused significant traffic disruption and mass flight cancellations nationwide.
Wildfires Rage in Argentina's Patagonia
In Argentina, wildfires have reignited in Patagonia, burning more than 30,000 hectares of forest since December, according to Euronews. Around 500 firefighters have been deployed to Chubut province to combat the flames. Another 170 firefighters are working to contain fires near Puerto Patriada, close to the Chilean border, where fires that broke out in early January have scorched more than 22,000 hectares. Investigators have confirmed the presence of flammable gases at the ignition point of the blaze.
Border Patrol Chief to Leave Minneapolis
In other news, U.S. Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino is expected to leave Minneapolis on Tuesday, along with other agents, Euronews reported. According to a source familiar with the matter, President Donald Trump scaled back federal presence in Minneapolis and replaced Bovino with border czar, Tom Homan. Bovino has faced fierce criticism following a second fatal shooting amid the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Minneapolis. The Trump administration agreed to scale back federal presence after a second fatal shooting by federal officers.
