Deadly Winter Storm Grips US, Leaving Thousands Without Power and Flights Delayed
A severe winter storm swept across the United States over the weekend, causing multiple deaths, widespread power outages, and significant travel disruptions. The storm, which stretched from Texas to Maine, left thousands without power and snarled roadways, burying major cities under heavy snow, according to the BBC.
The BBC reported that some areas in the Northeast experienced more than 20 inches (50.8cm) of snow within a 24-hour period, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Canadian officials also noted that the storm seriously disrupted southern Ontario.
The New York Times described the impact in Oxford, Mississippi, where trees sagged under the weight of ice, with many collapsing onto houses, vehicles, and utility lines. Mayor Robyn Tannehill communicated via Facebook on Sunday night, acknowledging the difficult conditions and praising the crews working to address the storm's impact. She noted that many residents were stuck in frigid conditions without electricity or transportation to shelters.
The BBC reported that the storm led to the cancellation and delay of thousands of flights due to the severe conditions. The storm's impact extended beyond travel, causing chaos and disruption to daily life for millions across the affected regions.
