Pro-Palestine Activist Ends Hunger and Thirst Strike in UK Prison
Umer Khalid, a 22-year-old British pro-Palestine activist, ended his hunger and thirst strike in Wormwood Scrubs Prison in London on Sunday after his health rapidly deteriorated, according to Al Jazeera. Khalid, who is being held on pre-trial remand, was treated in intensive care after his heart rate slowed to a dangerous level. His family confirmed that he has since returned to prison.
Khalid began refusing fluids late on Friday, Al Jazeera reported. He is one of eight Palestine Action-linked remand prisoners who have participated in a hunger strike since November.
UK Authorities Assist in Major Drug Seizure in Atlantic
In other news, British police assisted in the seizure of a record nine-tonne haul of cocaine from a "narco sub" in the Atlantic Ocean, Sky News reported. The seizure occurred approximately 230 nautical miles from the Azores archipelago, its intended destination. Portuguese police led the operation. The semi-submersible eventually sank before authorities could retrieve all of its cargo, leaving 35 of the 300 packages at the bottom of the Atlantic. The seized drugs weighed nearly as much as a school bus, according to Sky News. Authorities believe this is the largest narcotics cargo ever bound for Portugal.
