Minneapolis, MN - Representative Ilhan Omar was sprayed with an unknown liquid by a man during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis on Tuesday. The man was immediately apprehended by security and arrested, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
The incident occurred while Omar, a Democrat representing Minnesota, was speaking at the town hall. According to CBS News, Omar was calling for the abolishment of ICE and the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem when the man, who was seated in the front row, rushed toward her and sprayed her with a substance while yelling.
Minneapolis police reported that the man used a syringe to spray the liquid onto the congresswoman. He was subsequently booked into Hennepin County Jail for third-degree assault, police said.
Despite the incident, Omar refused to leave the event. "We will not be intimidated," she stated, according to CBS News.
The incident took place days after another incident involving federal agents in Minneapolis. A Department of Homeland Security report sent to Congress and obtained by ABC News revealed that two U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents fired their weapons during the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti on Saturday. The report stated that it did not mention Pretti reaching for his firearm. The report said DHS conducted a preliminary review of body-worn camera footage and Customs and Border Protection documentation from the scene and is notifying lawmakers of what they say are key details from before and after Pretti was shot and killed.
In other news, a North Texas mother is grieving the loss of her three sons after they drowned in a frozen pond on Monday. The Fannin County Sheriff's Office reported that the brothers fell through the ice on a private pond near their home outside Bonham, approximately 70 miles northeast of Dallas.
Cheyenne Hangaman, the mother of the boys, told investigators that she was outside with her children when the incident occurred. She said she had warned them to stay away from the water. Hangaman told investigators her youngest son tried to "ice skate" on the frozen pond and fell through the ice.
