AI Boom Foreseen as Double-Edged Sword by Tech Leader
The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to reshape the technological landscape, creating both significant opportunities and potential disruptions, according to Chuck Robbins, chairman and chief executive of Cisco Systems. Robbins warned of both "victors and carnage" in the AI market, suggesting that the current enthusiasm may be a bubble with some companies unlikely to survive.
Robbins, whose company is a major provider of IT infrastructure for AI applications, told the BBC that AI would be "bigger than the internet." He also predicted that AI would change or eliminate jobs, particularly in customer service.
Mediterranean Tragedy: Hundreds Feared Drowned
In a separate incident, as many as 380 people were feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea last week as Cyclone Harry lashed southern Italy and Malta, the Italian coastguard reported. Maltese authorities confirmed one shipwreck resulted in the loss of 50 lives, with only one survivor who was hospitalized in Malta, according to The Guardian. The incident occurred on Friday.
Floods Devastate Southern Africa, Triggering Crocodile Warnings
Devastating floods in southern Africa have claimed more than 100 lives since the beginning of the year and displaced hundreds of thousands of people in South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. The Guardian reported that authorities and aid workers are warning of potential hunger, cholera outbreaks, and attacks by crocodiles that have spread with the floodwaters. More than 70 deaths occurred in Zimbabwe and 30 in South Africa, where hundreds were evacuated.
Guyanese Businessman Facing Extradition Elected Opposition Leader
In Guyana, Azruddin Mohamed, a businessman facing extradition to the US on charges of gold smuggling and money laundering, was elected as the country's opposition leader. According to The Guardian, Mohamed's election came six months after he formed a political party that quickly became the second largest in the South American country. Mohamed is 38 years old.
