Multiple Incidents Unfold Across the U.S., Sparking Investigations and Controversy
Several unrelated incidents across the United States dominated headlines Tuesday, ranging from a shooting involving Border Patrol agents in Arizona to a congressional investigation into organ transplant protocols and a disruption at a town hall meeting in Minneapolis.
In Arizona, a man was hospitalized after allegedly exchanging gunfire with Border Patrol agents near Arivaca on Tuesday morning, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI. At approximately 7:20 a.m. local time, Border Patrol agents attempted to stop a pickup truck, but the driver "failed to yield to agents and fled on foot," DHS said in a statement. The suspect then allegedly "fired at an Air and Marine Operations helicopter and fired at USBP agents." Border Patrol agents returned fire, striking the man. The number of times he was shot remains unclear. DHS reported that the driver was treated at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. An FBI spokesperson told CBS News that the agency is investigating "an alleged assault on a federal officer."
Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., House lawmakers launched an investigation into the University of Chicago Medical Center and Montefiore Medical Center in New York, amid allegations that they allowed wealthy foreign patients to bypass U.S. organ transplant waiting lists. Reps. Jason Smith, R-Mo., and David Schweikert, R-Ariz., who lead the House Ways and Means Committees oversight effort, sent letters to the hospitals on Tuesday. The investigation comes as more than 100,000 Americans remain on organ transplant lists, and thousands die each year waiting for life-saving organs, according to Fox News.
In Minneapolis, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., was targeted with an unknown spray during a town hall meeting Tuesday evening. The incident occurred amid recent shootings involving federal immigration agents and local agitators in the city, according to Fox News. Reports indicate that an individual approached Omar and sprayed her with a substance that had a foul odor. Despite the disruption, Omar refused to leave and continued the town hall. "Please don't let them have the show," Omar could be heard saying after she was hit with the foul-smelling spray, according to Fox News.
