Amazon Confirms Layoffs After Accidental Email, Cisco CEO Warns of AI "Carnage"
Amazon confirmed a new round of global layoffs after an email was mistakenly sent to employees on Tuesday, according to the BBC. The draft email, written by Colleen Aubrey, a senior vice president at Amazon Web Services (AWS), was included as part of a calendar invitation sent by an executive assistant to a number of Amazon workers.
The email referred to employees in the US, Canada, and Costa Rica being laid off as part of an effort to "strengthen the company." The message was quickly cancelled after being shared by mistake. An Amazon spokesman declined to comment on the accidental email. The title of the calendar invitation was "Send proj."
In related news, Chuck Robbins, chairman and chief executive of Cisco Systems, warned of potential "carnage" resulting from the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. Robbins told the BBC that AI is going to "change everything" and will be "bigger than the internet." He added that while winners will emerge, the current market is likely a bubble, and some companies "won't make it."
Cisco, a leading technology company, provides critical IT infrastructure for AI. Robbins stated that AI will change or eliminate some jobs, particularly in customer service.
