Amazon announced plans on Wednesday to reduce its workforce by approximately 16,000 employees, according to an email sent to staff by Senior Vice President Beth Galetti. The company stated the move is an effort to "strengthen" the organization by reducing "layers" and "bureaucracy" within its workforce (ABC News).

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star freed the cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II after it became trapped in thick sea ice near Antarctica on Saturday. Ten people have died in New York City following a winter storm over the weekend. Among the deceased was a 90-year-old woman with dementia who wandered outside in frigid temperatures. Doreen Ellis left her apartment in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood overnight and was found dead Monday morning in the backyard of another building, according to her family and neighbors (Fox News). "She had done that wandered out before, but this was in the summertime. Being that it's cold, you dont think that somebody will go outside," a neighbor told Gothamist (Fox News).
