Swedish Amusement Park Fined Following Fatal Rollercoaster Derailment
Gröna Lund amusement park in Sweden was fined nearly €588,000 ($491,000) on Wednesday in connection with a 2023 rollercoaster derailment that resulted in one death and nine injuries, according to Euronews. The incident occurred on June 25, 2023, on the Jetline ride.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the front of the train appeared to jump off the tracks before coming to a stop, with one car tilted toward the ground, Euronews reported. Three people were thrown from the rollercoaster.
Major Fire at Courchevel Hotel Forces Evacuation
In other news, a major fire at the Grandes Alpes hotel in Courchevel, France, led to the evacuation of nearly 300 people on Tuesday evening, Euronews reported. Over 100 firefighters battled the blaze, with four suffering minor injuries. Firefighters were called around 7 p.m. as flames spread quickly through the roof spaces of the five-star property. By Wednesday morning, more than 100 firefighters, backed by around 60 vehicles and reinforcements from neighboring departments, were still working to extinguish the fire.
Luminar Sale Approved Despite Late Bid
The sale of Luminar's lidar business was approved despite a last-minute mystery bid, TechCrunch reported. Moments before a bankruptcy judge was expected to approve the sale, an unidentified party submitted an offer that apparently exceeded the leading bid of $33 million. According to a lawyer for Luminar, while the bid was substantially higher, there were infirmities in the offer. The company ultimately decided to stick with the $33 million bid it received from MicroVision during an auction on Monday. The identity of the party who submitted the late offer was not revealed.
DHS Uses Face Recognition App
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published new details about Mobile Fortify, the facial recognition app that federal immigration agents use to identify people in the field, Wired reported. The details, including the company behind the app, were published as part of DHS's 2025 AI Use Case Inventory. The inventory includes two entries for Mobile Fortify—one for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and another for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—and says the app is in the deployment stage for both. CBP says that Mobile Fortify became operational at the beginning of May last year, while ICE got access to it on May 20, 2025.
