Amazon confirmed it would cut 16,000 jobs globally as part of an effort to "strengthen the company" and "remove bureaucracy," according to a BBC Technology report and a statement from Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology at Amazon. The announcement followed an accidental email sent to staff on Tuesday, which was quickly cancelled, but revealed the planned redundancies in the US, Canada, and Costa Rica.
In other news, Fox News Channel marked its 24th consecutive year as the most-watched cable news network, dominating January with nearly 60% of the cable news share across both total day and primetime. Fox News Channel outdrew MSNBC and CNN combined among both total day and primetime viewers during the first month of 2026. Meanwhile, Hawaii Gov. Josh Greene announced plans to remove 10,000 vacation rentals from the market in an effort to address the affordable housing crisis. In his State of the State address on Monday, Greene stated, "We also have to return more homes to local families – including short-term rentals that have taken too many units off the market."
The U.S. government is moving to reopen its embassy in Venezuela "very quickly" to establish a diplomatic presence on the ground, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. "We have a team on the ground there assessing it, and we think very quickly we'll be able to open a U.S. diplomatic presence on the ground," Rubio told members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday. The goal is to interact with officials on the ground.
In Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, criticized former President Joe Biden and his administration for failing to deliver tangible results for Americans. "The Biden-Harris administration didn't provide those specific tangible things that people could see or feel," Shapiro said this week on the "Raging Moderates" podcast, as part of the rollout of his new memoir, "Where We Ke."
