Starmer Seeks Stronger UK-China Ties Amid US Uncertainty
Beijing - UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday in Beijing, aiming to strengthen economic ties between the two nations, according to The Guardian. The meeting, the first visit by a UK leader to China in eight years, comes amid growing uncertainty about the reliability of the United States as a partner, also reported by The Guardian.
Starmer insisted he was "clear-eyed" about the threat China poses to the UK’s national security, according to The Guardian. The 40-minute meeting was intended to bolster the bond with the superpower, The Guardian reported.
The Prime Minister's visit also touched on the Chagos deal, with Starmer noting that US intelligence agencies disagreed with President Trump’s opposition to the agreement, according to The Guardian. Starmer underlined that the US administration had previously supported the deal as it bolstered their defenses, The Guardian reported. Downing Street sources indicated the agreement was a done deal and would not be scuppered by the US president's change of heart, according to The Guardian.
