Landslide in Sicily Forces Evacuation of 1,500
A massive landslide in Niscemi, Sicily, triggered by heavy rain, caused significant damage and forced the evacuation of over 1,500 residents on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. According to Sky News, the landslide caused the edge of the town to collapse, leaving dozens of houses teetering on the edge of a cliff and deemed "uninhabitable."
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni visited Niscemi to assess the damage. The full extent of the damage is still being evaluated, but the collapse has rendered some structures unsafe for habitation.
In other news, a major fire broke out at the Grandes Alpes hotel in Courchevel, France, on Tuesday evening. Euronews reported that nearly 300 people were evacuated from the luxury ski resort. Over 100 firefighters battled the blaze, with reinforcements arriving from neighboring departments. Four firefighters sustained minor injuries while combating the flames. Turkish authorities detained six individuals on Wednesday on suspicion of spying for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
