Commercial Flight Crashes in Colombia, Killing 15
A commercial flight crashed near the Colombian-Venezuelan border on Wednesday, killing all 15 people on board, including a Colombian politician, according to Colombia's state-owned airline Satena. Flight HK-4709, operated by a Beechcraft 1900, disappeared after departing from Cúcuta at 11:42 a.m. and was scheduled to land in Ocaña at approximately 12:05 p.m., Fox News reported.
The airline stated that the flight's last contact with air traffic control occurred at 11:54 a.m. Fox News reported that the flight would have exhausted its flight endurance time at 2 p.m. The cause of the crash remains unclear.
Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Plot to Kill Iranian Dissident
In New York City, Carlisle Rivera, a self-employed Brooklyn pipe fitter, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for his role in a plot to kill Masih Alinejad, an Iranian dissident, according to The New York Times. Alinejad is an activist and critic of the Iranian government.
Rivera is the third person to be sentenced in connection with the plot, which unfolded in 2024. "Before being sentenced, Mr. Rivera apologized to my fellow Americans and to Ms. Alinejad, who was in court," The New York Times reported. Alinejad addressed Rivera in court, who gazed back at her while seated in a tan jail uniform.
Iran Protesters Seek Secret Medical Treatment to Avoid Arrest
In Iran, protesters injured during demonstrations are reportedly seeking medical treatment in secret to avoid arrest, according to the BBC. Tara, a protester in Isfahan, told the BBC that she and a friend were shot by security forces during a protest.
"My friend told an armed member of the security forces, 'Just don't shoot us,' and he immediately fired several shots at us," Tara said. Fearing arrest, they avoided hospitals and were instead helped by strangers. "People helped us and we got into a car... I said, 'Don't take us to a hospital,'" she told the BBC.
Russian Drone Strike on Ukraine Train Kills Five
A Russian drone strike targeted a passenger train in northeastern Ukraine, killing five people, the BBC reported. The attack caused panic among passengers, according to a soldier who was on board.
"When a carriage on the train was hit... passengers threw themselves on the floor in panic," the BBC reported. The soldier, identified as Omar, instructed passengers to evacuate immediately before the carriage burst into flames.
