Springsteen Releases Protest Song as Trump Accuses Minneapolis Mayor of Legal Violation
Bruce Springsteen released a new song, "Streets of Minneapolis," protesting President Donald Trump's immigration policies in Minneapolis, while Trump accused Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of violating the law for refusing to enforce federal immigration laws, according to statements made on Wednesday. Springsteen dedicated the song to "the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good," who were fatally shot by federal agents, according to an Instagram post.
The song, released Wednesday, decries Trump's immigration crackdown in the Minnesota city. Springsteen sings of "King Trump's private army from the DHS" and recounts the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, according to Time.
Trump responded to Frey's stance on immigration enforcement with accusations of illegal activity. "Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!" Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday, according to Time.
Frey stated in a social media post that Minneapolis "does not and will not enforce federal immigration laws," informing White House border czar Tom Homan, dispatched by Trump to oversee immigration operations in the area, that local officers would not participate in federal immigration enforcement, according to Time.
Earlier in the week, Trump had seemingly softened his tone toward Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, according to Time.
