Meta Pivots to AI, Zuckerberg Foresees AI-Powered Future
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined a future dominated by artificial intelligence, shifting the company's focus from the metaverse to AI-driven products and experiences, according to statements made during Meta's Q4 2025 earnings call on Wednesday. Zuckerberg envisions AI fundamentally changing how people interact with technology, predicting a world where AI-powered glasses are commonplace.
Zuckerberg stated that Meta users will begin to see new AI models and products from the company in the coming months. He highlighted AI-driven commerce as a key area of focus, with plans for "agentic shopping tools" that will allow users to find products from businesses within Meta's catalog. "This also has implications for commerce," Zuckerberg said.
This strategic shift comes after Meta restructured its AI lab in 2025, rebuilding the foundations of its AI program, according to Zuckerberg. He anticipates steadily pushing the frontier of AI throughout the coming year. This pivot also appears to be at the expense of the metaverse, with Zuckerberg seemingly replacing his metaverse ambitions with a vision of an AI-generated social feed. Emma Roth of The Verge noted that Zuckerberg believes AI will become the next big media format, making feeds more immersive and interactive. "We started with text, and then moved to ph," Zuckerberg said.
Zuckerberg also expressed strong confidence in the future of AI smart glasses. "Its hard to imagine a world in several years where most glasses that people wear arent AI glasses," he said. He noted that sales of Meta's glasses tripled in the last year, claiming they are among the fastest-growing consumer electronics in history.
The shift towards AI reflects a broader trend in the tech industry. Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, reported a $7.6 billion increase in net income from its investment in the AI lab in the last quarter, according to TechCrunch. Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI, which reportedly has a 20% revenue share agreement with Microsoft. OpenAI is currently looking to raise additional funding at a valuation between $750 billion and $830 billion, Bloomberg reported. In September, Microsoft and OpenAI renegotiated some of the terms of their deal when OpenAI restructured.
In other tech news, Sebastiaan de With, co-founder of Lux and known for his work on apps like Halide, Kino, and Orion, announced he is joining Apple's design team. "So excited to work with the very best team in the world on my favorite products," de With said in his post.
