Landslide in Sicily Forces Evacuation of 1,500
A landslide triggered by heavy rain in southern Sicily has caused significant damage to the town of Niscemi, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,500 people, Sky News reported on Wednesday. The ground beneath the town collapsed, leaving dozens of houses teetering on the edge of a cliff.
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni visited Niscemi on Wednesday to assess the damage. Some homes were rendered "uninhabitable" after the landslide, according to Sky News.
Fury Announces Boxing Comeback
Tyson Fury has announced his return to boxing with a comeback fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov, Sky News reported Wednesday. Fury, 37, retired a year ago after successive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk. He plans to fight three times this year and has been training in Thailand ahead of his return. The fight against Makhmudov will take place in the UK on April 11 and will be screened on Netflix, according to Sky News. This will be Fury's first contest since his retirement.
EU Grapples with Defense Amid Geopolitical Shifts
Amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, the European Union is considering its defense capabilities. European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius told Euronews on Wednesday that while the EU relies on the US nuclear protections, it can and must work towards becoming independent in conventional defence. "Europeans cannot replace the US nuclear umbrella, at least for the time being, but when it comes to conventional defence the situation is different," Kubilius said, according to Euronews. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated on Monday that the European Union relies on the US nuclear protections.
India and the European Union have struck one of the biggest trade deals in history, Al Jazeera reported. The agreement comes months after the United States imposed tariffs on both India and the European Union. Fighting continues in Ukraine. The death toll from a Russian attack on a passenger train in Ukraine's Kharkiv region on Tuesday rose to six, after the remains of several bodies were recovered from the wreckage, the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutors Office said on the Telegram messaging app, according to Al Jazeera.
