Zuckerberg Bets Big on AI, While Apple Gains Design Talent and ICE Uses AI for Tip Processing
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is aggressively pursuing artificial intelligence as the future of social media and wearable technology, while Apple has bolstered its design team with a key hire, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is utilizing AI to process tips.
Zuckerberg stated during Meta's Q4 2025 earnings call on Wednesday that he believes a future without smart glasses is "hard to imagine," according to TechCrunch. He envisions AI becoming the next major media format, creating more immersive and interactive feeds. "We started with text, and then moved to ph," Zuckerberg said. He noted that Meta's glasses sales tripled in the past year, positioning them as potentially one of the fastest-growing consumer electronics in history. This shift towards AI represents a pivot from Meta's previous focus on the metaverse, according to The Verge.
Meanwhile, Apple has acquired Sebastiaan de With, co-founder of Lux and known for his work on apps like Halide, Kino, and Orion, The Verge reported. De With announced he was joining Apple's design team, stating he was "so excited to work with the very best team in the world on my favorite products." De With is recognized for his expertise on Apple's iPhone cameras, including his analysis of the iPhone 16's camera.
In other AI-related news, ICE is using Palantir's generative AI tools to sort through and summarize immigration enforcement tips submitted through its public form, Wired reported. According to a Department of Homeland Security inventory released Wednesday, the "AI Enhanced ICE Tip Processing service" aims to help investigators quickly identify and act on urgent cases and translate submissions not in English. The system also provides a "BLUF," or bottom line up front, a high-level summary of the tip generated using at least one large language model. BLUF is a military term also used internally by Palantir.
