Klobuchar Announces Bid for Minnesota Governor
ST. PAUL, Minnesota – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar announced her candidacy for Minnesota governor early Thursday, January 29, 2026, following Governor Tim Walz's decision not to seek a third term, according to NPR News. Klobuchar made the announcement via a video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In the video, Klobuchar acknowledged the challenges the state has faced. "Minnesotans, we've been through a lot," she said, referencing recent tragedies, including the separate shootings of two American citizens.
Klobuchar's announcement comes amid other significant political and economic developments. President Donald Trump has been actively pursuing policies impacting universities and families. A year prior, on January 29, 2025, Trump issued an executive order targeting antisemitism on college campuses, leading to investigations at multiple schools and the withholding of billions of dollars in contracts and grants, according to NPR News. The Trump administration pressured universities to align their policies more closely with the administration's views.
Furthermore, Trump has rallied business leaders to support "Trump Accounts" for newborns, Time reported. The initiative, part of the "Big Beautiful Bill," provides $1,000 to every American child born between 2025 and 2028, to be invested in the SP 500. "Even people that truly hate me are making this investment," Trump said at an event in Washington, D.C.
Meanwhile, Democrats are threatening a government shutdown, tied to President Trump's immigration policies, Time reported. This follows a previous record-breaking shutdown the prior year related to healthcare subsidies. Republicans appear unified in supporting Trump's policies, even after federal agents killed two Americans in Minneapolis, according to Time. The White House has dismissed the outrage over the immigration crackdown.
In other news, Kornél Mundruczó’s film "At the Sea," starring Amy Adams, has been acquired by MK2 Films for international sales, Variety reported. The film will be featured in the Berlinale competition. The film depicts Adams as a woman rebuilding her identity after a self-destructive past.
