Nicki Minaj Voices Support for Trump Amidst Immigration Policy Concerns
Rapper Nicki Minaj declared herself to be Donald Trump's "number one fan" on Wednesday, while also displaying what she called her Trump "gold card" visa, which she said offers residency and a path to US citizenship, according to BBC World. The declaration came at a time when Trump's immigration policies are under scrutiny, with several recent cases highlighting the impact on children and families.
Minaj, who previously criticized Trump's hardline immigration policies, praised his leadership in recent years, BBC World reported. Trump called the star up on stage in Washington D.C. after she announced her support for the "Trump Accounts," which provide trust funds for children.
The declaration of support comes as immigration policies continue to be a focal point of debate. Congressman Joaquin Castro met with five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father at the Dilley detention center in Texas, The Guardian reported. Castro shared a photograph on social media of Liam resting in his father's arms, stating that he told Liam how much his family, his school, and the country loves him and is praying for him. Liam became a symbol of the reach of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations after being detained on his way home from preschool in Minneapolis, The Guardian noted.
In a separate incident, five-year-old Génesis Ester Gutiérrez Castellanos, a US citizen, was deported to Honduras alongside her mother on January 11, according to The Guardian. Génesis had never known Honduras. Her mother, Karen Guadalupe Gutiérrez Castellanos, whose visa application was pending, said she would send her daughter back to the US soon accompanied by another relative. Génesis misses her cousins, classmates, and kindergarten teachers in Austin, Texas, The Guardian reported. Génesis's mother said, "The day I separate from my daughter will be the most painful of my life."
Meanwhile, in other international news, Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed the cancellation of an oil shipment to Cuba, insisting the decision was sovereign and not a response to pressure from the US, The Guardian reported.
