Health and Technology Trends Emerge as Focus for Americans
Americans are increasingly focused on improving health outcomes and exploring the potential of technology, including artificial intelligence, to enhance various aspects of life, according to recent reports. Concerns about longevity, mental health, and the economic impact of technological advancements are also gaining traction.
The pursuit of longer, healthier lives is a growing priority for many Americans. John Hancock CEO recently testified before the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, emphasizing the importance of improving long-term health outcomes to reduce healthcare costs. "There is a role for each of us in helping more Americans live longer, healthier, better lives," the CEO stated. While life expectancy is increasing, Americans spend an average of 12 years in poor health, with lifestyle diseases like heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes being the leading causes of death.
Some individuals are taking a more radical approach to longevity, with groups like the "Vitalists" advocating for the defeat of death as humanity's top priority. Nathan Cheng, a proponent of this movement, argues that "if you believe that life is good and there's inherent moral value to life, it stands to reason that the ultimate logical conclusion here is that we should try to extend lifespan indefinitely." He believes that solving aging is a moral imperative for everyone.
Mental health is also receiving increased attention, with studies suggesting that alternative treatments like Vitamin D and Omega-3 supplements may have a significant impact on depression. According to one report, the effect size of 5000 IU/day of Vitamin D on depression is around 1.8, comparable to going from a "C to an A." This is compared to the standardized effect size of antidepressants, which is around 0.4, or going from a "C to a C." The effect size of 1500 mg/day of "60 EPA" Omega-3 supplements is around 0.6, or going from a "C to a B."
Meanwhile, the rise of artificial intelligence is driving significant capital expenditures, with some analysts predicting a slowdown in the pace of growth. Several tech companies, including Meta and Tesla, have announced increased spending on AI, leading to fluctuations in stock prices. Meta's capital expenditures could reach $35 billion this year, nearly double the previous amount. However, analysts warn that this growth may not be sustainable in the long term.
The popularity of physical activities like running is also being examined for its impact on the body. The 2025 Paris Marathon broke participation records, highlighting the enthusiasm for running among both professional and amateur athletes. However, concerns are being raised about the toll the sport takes on the body, with some experiencing stress and exhaustion.
