FBI Seizes 2020 Voting Records in Georgia; Man Impersonates Agent in Attempt to Free Inmate
ATLANTA, GA – The FBI seized original 2020 Fulton County voting records on Wednesday while serving a search warrant at the county's Elections Hub and Operations Center, according to Fulton County officials and ABC News. The FBI confirmed they were conducting court-authorized activity at the facility but provided no further information. The seizure occurred the same day that President Donald Trump posted a series of discredited conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election and the 2016 election, ABC News reported.
In a separate incident, a man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly impersonating an FBI agent in an attempt to free Luigi Mangione from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to federal court filings and a law enforcement source speaking to CBS News.
According to a court affidavit unsealed on Thursday, Mark Anderson approached the intake area of the detention center and claimed "he was an FBI agent in possession of paperwork 'signed by a Judge' authorizing the release of a specific inmate who was in custody at the MDC," CBS News reported. The inmate was identified by a federal law enforcement source as Mangione, who is charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan in December 2024. The source added that Anderson had traveled to New York for a job opportunity.
Meanwhile, tensions remained high in Minneapolis following the shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, by federal agents. This was the second shooting of a U.S. citizen by federal agents in the city this month, following the fatal shooting of Renee Good, 37, on Jan. 7, ABC News reported. The incidents have sparked protests and clashes with law enforcement. Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., criticized Republican Senate candidates in Georgia for not demanding an investigation into Pretti's death, Fox News reported. Ossoff questioned on X, "Will one, even ONE, Republican U.S. Senate candidate in Georgia join other GOP leaders who are calling for a full, transparent, independent investigation into Alex Prettis killing in Minnesota?"
In other news, researchers at Oregon State University have collected new data about the coastal marten, also known as the Humboldt marten, an elusive forest carnivore "renowned for its cuteness" that was nearly driven to extinction in the 20th century, CBS News reported. The species, about the size of a ferret, lives in coastal forests. Only four isolated populations of the species still exist, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The species is listed under the federal Endangered Species Act.
