Potential Blizzard Threatens Southeast as Other News Unfolds
A potential blizzard was forecast to impact the Southeastern United States this weekend, while tensions escalated in the Middle East, Super Bowl injury concerns arose, a woman was murdered in South Carolina, and an explosion rocked an apartment building in Los Angeles County.
The Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee were bracing for a winter storm that could bring 3 to 8 inches of snow, according to ABC News. The storm was expected to begin Friday evening with snow over Appalachia, along the Tennessee-North Carolina border, and western Virginia. On Saturday, the snow was forecast to spread east into eastern Georgia and much of South Carolina, North Carolina, and southern Virginia. The storm could also bring powerful winds, potentially leading to blizzard conditions with visibility reduced to less than a quarter-mile, ABC News reported.
Meanwhile, in the Middle East, Iran announced it would conduct live-fire military drills in the Strait of Hormuz next week, Fox News reported. The exercises were to be carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps naval forces. This announcement came after President Donald Trump stated that a U.S. armada, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, was heading toward Iran. Trump warned Tehran to return to negotiations over its nuclear program, according to a statement posted to Truth Social.
In sports news, both Super Bowl LX teams, the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, were dealing with quarterback injuries, Fox News reported. The first injury report for both teams, released on Wednesday, listed Sam Darnold of the Seahawks as limited with an oblique injury, while Drake Maye of the Patriots was listed with a right shoulder injury. "NFL RedZone" host Scott Hanson called Darnold the best "human interest" story for Super Bowl LX, given his career journey, according to Fox News.
In South Carolina, a woman was found shot and burned after being lured to a fake puppy sale, Fox News reported. Iryanna Jarissa Fleming, 19, and Daquinn Taheen Thomas, 31, were arrested on January 23 and charged with murder, first-degree arson, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to jail records. Authorities indicated the investigation was ongoing and additional charges could be filed. Nikko Carraway, 31, also faces murder charges.
In Los Angeles County, an explosion and fire ripped through an apartment building in Bell Gardens, killing a teenager, Fox News reported. Materials consistent with homemade explosives and fireworks were found at the site. Aerial images showed a portion of the roof blown off. Police confirmed that a body found inside the blast site matched that of a 13-year-old who was reported missing after the explosion.
