Tech Companies Make Headlines with Mergers, Record Sales, and Social Activism
Several major tech companies made news this week with announcements ranging from potential mergers to record-breaking sales and employee activism.
Elon Musk is reportedly considering merging SpaceX with either Tesla or xAI, according to Reuters, ahead of SpaceX's planned IPO later this year. Bloomberg later reported the same day that SpaceX is considering a potential merger with Tesla or an alternative combination. The merger with xAI would reportedly support SpaceX's plans to launch data centers into space.
Meanwhile, Apple announced a record-breaking iPhone quarter as part of its Q1 2026 earnings report. iPhone revenue surged past $85.3 billion, contributing to a total revenue of $143.8 billion, a 16 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to Apple. "The demand for iPhone was simply staggering, with revenue growing 23 percent year over year," the company stated.
In other news, Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine granted employees permission to take Friday off to participate in a nationwide general strike protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to TechCrunch. The strike calls for "no work, no school, and no shopping" in protest of ICE raids. Stubblebine communicated to Medium staff in a Slack message that employees were free to participate in the strike as they saw fit.
