President Donald Trump addressed several international issues Thursday, including relations with China, Cuba, and the conflict in Ukraine, while Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro criticized rhetoric from Philadelphia's District Attorney.
Trump warned the U.K. against strengthening ties with China, hours after Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with President Xi Jinping in Beijing to reset relations, according to Fox News. Trump, speaking to Fox News while traveling to Florida, said it was "very dangerous" for the U.K. to "get into business with China." Starmer and Xi had called for a renewed "strategic partnership," highlighting the pressures facing them amid global instability.
Separately, Trump declared a national emergency regarding Cuba, citing the communist regime's alignment with hostile foreign powers and terrorist groups. Fox News reported that Trump issued an executive order to punish countries that supply oil to Cuba. The order states that the policies and actions of the Cuban government constitute "an unusual and extraordinary threat… to the national security and foreign policy of the United States."
Regarding Ukraine, BBC World reported that Trump stated Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed not to attack Ukrainian cities for a week due to the "extraordinary cold" weather. Trump did not specify when the pause would begin, but temperatures in Kyiv are expected to drop significantly. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Trump's announcement and said he expected Russia to keep its promise. Russia has not confirmed any such agreement.
Meanwhile, within the United States, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner's comparison of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to Nazis. According to Fox News, Shapiro, during an interview with "Special Report," called Krasner's remarks "abhorrent" and urged a cooling down of rhetoric. Krasner had said, "This is a small bunch of wannabe Nazis, that's what they are, in a country of 350 million. We outnumber them. If we have to hunt you down the way they hunted down Nazis for decades, we will find your identities."
