ASEAN Does Not Recognize Myanmar Elections; Mozambique Grapples with Flood Aftermath; Greenland Updates Currency and Addresses US Flag Stunt
Several international events unfolded on January 30, 2026, ranging from political developments in Southeast Asia to natural disasters in Africa and cultural incidents in Greenland.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) does not recognize the recent elections held in Myanmar, according to Philippine Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro. Lazaro stated on Thursday that ASEAN has not endorsed the three phases of the elections, which concluded the previous weekend and saw a military-backed party claim victory, according to Al Jazeera. ASEAN is comprised of 11 member states.
Meanwhile, in Mozambique, aid workers are struggling to reach communities devastated by floods. Sky News reported that the broken banks of the Limpopo River have created a vast sea of stagnant water, submerging farms and leaving hundreds of thousands in need of assistance. Yousra Elbagir, Sky News' Africa correspondent, reported from Gaza province, witnessing food aid being delivered by Mercy Air helicopters to starving communities.
In Greenland, new Danish coins featuring the territory were issued, marking a change from previous designs where Greenland shared space on the currency with the Faroe Islands, according to Euronews. The updated coins, which have been circulating since December 2025, feature the new King Frederik X, who ascended to the throne in 2024.
Separately, the mayor of Greenland's capital, Nuuk, called on media professionals and content creators to act responsibly after a German comedian attempted to raise the US flag near the cultural center, according to Euronews. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, involved Bavarian comedian Maxi Schafroth, 41, who claimed to be a US official when confronted by locals, according to Euronews. Gavin Blackburn reported that the incident follows long-standing territorial designs on Greenland by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which triggered a crisis within NATO.
