Man Arrested for Impersonating FBI Agent in Attempt to Free Inmate
A man was arrested at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on Thursday after allegedly impersonating an FBI agent in an attempt to free Luigi Mangione, according to authorities. Mark Anderson, 36, of Minnesota, was charged in connection with the incident, Sky News reported.
Anderson reportedly arrived at the jail claiming to have a court order for Mangione's release. Mangione, 27, is currently being held while awaiting trial for the 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, according to a complaint.
During a search of Anderson's bag, officers discovered a barbecue fork and a circular steel blade resembling a pizza cutter, Sky News reported.
In other news, US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that Hamas was expected to disarm as part of a fragile ceasefire agreement with Israel. "A lot of people said they'll never disarm. It looks like they're going to disarm," Trump said at a cabinet meeting, Euronews reported. Trump hailed cooperation with Hamas, considered a terrorist group by the United States, after Israeli forces. The US said last week that it was moving into the next phase of the ceasefire plan that includes rebuilding Gaza and establishing the group of Palestinian experts that will administer daily affairs.
Meanwhile, Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine gave employees permission to take Friday off to participate in a nationwide general strike protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), TechCrunch reported. Activists behind the strike are calling for no work, no school, and no shopping amid a push to defund ICE. In a Slack message shared with Medium staff, Stubblebine said all employees were free to participate in the strike however they see fit.
The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) declassified a decades-old program used to eavesdrop on the Soviet Union's military communication signals, Ars Technica reported. The program, codenamed Jumpseat, was the United States' first-generation, highly elliptical orbit (HEO) signals-collection satellite. Eight Jumpseat satellites launched from 1971 through 1983.
The documentary "Melania," a film about President Donald Trump's third wife and former first lady, was released on Friday. A WIRED analysis showed that there were still plenty of seats available, unless you live near the AMC Classic Indian River 24 in Vero Beach, Florida, or the AMC Independence Commons 20 in Independence, Missouri.
