Trump Endorses Spending Deal to Avert Government Shutdown Amidst Protests
Washington D.C. - U.S. President Donald Trump endorsed a spending deal reached between Senate Republicans and Democrats on Thursday to prevent a government shutdown and temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), according to Sky News and Euronews. The agreement comes as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the deaths of two protesters in Minneapolis at the hands of federal agents.
The deal separates homeland security funding from a larger spending bill, providing the DHS with temporary funding for two weeks while negotiations continue regarding Democratic demands for restrictions on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a component of the DHS, Euronews reported. Trump stated in a Truth Social post that "Republicans and Democrats have come together to get the vast majority of the government funded until September" while extending current funding for Homeland Security, Sky News noted.
The move to avert a shutdown occurred against the backdrop of unrest following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, 37, and Renee Good, 37, by federal agents in Minneapolis, Euronews stated.
In other news, a separate incident unfolded in New York, where Mark Anderson, 36, from Minnesota, was arrested for impersonating an FBI agent at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Anderson allegedly claimed to have a court order to release Luigi Mangione, 27, who is being held while awaiting trial for the 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, Sky News reported. Authorities searched Anderson's bag and found a barbecue fork and a circular steel blade resembling a pizza cutter, according to the report.
Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in China for talks with President Xi Jinping aimed at resetting relations. President Trump commented on the situation, telling reporters that it is "very dangerous" for the UK to engage in business with China, Euronews reported. Downing Street responded by stating that the White House was aware of Starmer's trip and its objectives in advance, also pointing out that Trump himself is scheduled to visit China in April, according to Euronews.
In Spain, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia attended a solemn mass in Huelva for the 45 victims of the Adamuz train crash, Euronews reported. More than 300 relatives were in attendance, with many family members openly demanding that the full truth behind the crash be uncovered. The accident continues to cast a long shadow, with many describing their shock as undiminished weeks after the tragedy.
