NASA Faces Critical Decision on Future Mars Spacecraft

The debate, which has been ongoing behind closed doors at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., centers on the need for a new spacecraft capable of relaying communications from Mars to Earth.
The urgency for a new communications relay has increased following the recent loss of NASA's MAVEN spacecraft, Ars Technica reported. Currently, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been in service for 20 years, serves as NASA's best communications relay. Congress addressed this concern by adding $700 million to NASA's budget, specifically for Mars missions, according to Ars Technica.
